Valiant blade blanks in profile against the Guardian |
Jon Horne's Valiant/Guardian knife set and the various Sheath options he requested. The handle material is Stabilised Oak Burl. The most difficult part of making this set up was the Piggyback Sheath - it's quit a feat on its own!
The odd one out is the altered Talisman MK4 in Cocobolo and it's light coloured Sheath. The shape of the blade is based on Jon's requirements, which was easy enough to do.

The Leuku knife, together with a small Puukko knife, are what the Finish Reindeer herders rely very much on. The large knife for big jobs and the little knife for small jobs! My Leuku is based on the original Laplander design, but I wanted something thicker and weighted forward to aid with chopping.
I was more than happy with the Bearing steel based Leuku as made for me by my smithy friend, Brian Sorenson of Denmark. But he fell ill and was no longer able to able to supply me further with those blades.
Eventually, I took it upon myself to make my own Leuku type large knife/chopper made from D2 Sheffield steel. I also took the opportunity to make some adjustments here and there to improve on the cutting action - and so the Valiant came into being...
The handle on this Leuku is in highly figured Masur Birch over black fibre liners. The butt cap and are in brass.
The Sheath is 3.5mm veg tanned leather dyed to compliment the knife's handle.
Mike's Leuku
Number 4 of the original 5 Leuku blades. This one I made up for Mike from near where I live in Geordie land.
One last blade still not made up, which I had in mind of making up for myself. Of course I already have a whopping Leuku with a 250mm blade that I made specially for my trip to Oz. But for the UK the 205mm bladed version is far more suitable.

51200 Bearing Steel Leuku
This Leuku style knife is made from 4mm thick 52100 Bearing steel. Overall the knife is 320mm long with the blade being 205mm long and the handle is 115mm long.
The handle is Black Buffalo horn over red fibre liners. The butt cap is solid 3mm brass as are the 4 pins.
The blade is the same as one above and the main difference is the handle material, which is made up of Spalted Beech and coloured Cow horn over white fibre liners. Owing to the sectional make up extra brass pins were added.
Mike 'The War Bow Man' Leuku
Standard B. Sorenson Bearing Steel Leuku with a nicely figured Amboyna handle topped with a solid brass plate.
"A fine Leuku for a fine knowledgeable man."
